In Sunderland we spent our teenage days playing 'Stalker' in the strange landscape left as the coal mines shut down, waiting until it was dark enough to climb over barbed wire to read Shelley in the shipyards or sit in the chained-up shuggy boats at the funfair near Roker Beach, planning our escapes... foghorns and perma-mist, Peel's voice on tiny radios.

Little London Lantern Parade and Feast
Last Friday to Little London with parents, children and staff from Blenheim Primary School, which my daughter attends, for the Lantern Parade starting from neighbouring Little London Primary.
It's one of the areas in Leeds in which I've taught English as a Foreign Language: extra tuition, home visits, lugging dictionaries up tower block staircases. Late night SMS grammar emergencies.
Little London, little everywhere - at Blenheim Primary alone there are children from 56 nations, all of them fluent in Yorkshire within their first year.
(With a small police escort) we went in the subway and lived!
